These short lived times of year we call spring and summer are always the most popular seasons for weddings, especially when you have a a superb setting for your guests to experience in a wonderful outdoor environment. It is a time when the bright sunshine and warm air has everyone in good spirits at a wedding!

The gardens at Knebworth are looking spectacular again this year. They are so well looked after and always look so immaculate. They certainly do offer a beautiful setting for your wedding photographs with Knebworth House as a stunning backdrop.

When it comes to planning the First Dance, couples either love the idea of performing in front of their wedding guests, or sometimes the very thought of it fills them with dread! As a wedding photographer I see lots of different styles and choices for the first dance.

Sometimes a couple will take me completely by surprise by suddenly bursting into a well rehearsed routine when everyone is expecting them to shuffle around for a few minutes. It’s always great when that happens!

Obviously the first thing to think about is the the song.  Most couples pick first-dance music that is special to them: perhaps a song they listened to when they first met, or a romantic ditty that reflects their feelings for each other. Other choices could be music that fits with the theme of their wedding, or perhaps a lighthearted tune that mirrors their personalities and will make the wedding guests chuckle. There’s nothing wrong with a funny first dance!

• Choose a Professional It is vital that you choose an actual wedding photographer not someone who just photographs weddings every now and then in their spare time or at weekends. An experienced photographer has the knowledge to use the environment and the light correctly. If they are a full time professional they are going to have the skills and most importantly the time required to do a really great job before, during and after your wedding day.

• Have a Pre-Wedding Shoot Having a pre-wedding shoot can improve your wedding pictures more than you might realise. Think about it – the more time you spend with your photographer before the wedding the more likely it is that he or she will capture the very best images on the day itself.  Working with your photographer will allow you both to become comfortable in front of the lens and at ease with your photographer. All of my wedding bookings include a pre-wedding shoot and a complementary reception signature print.

• Relax on the Day The most important thing you can do is to relax, let go, and have fun on your wedding day. This will translate into beautiful photos.  Again the pre-shoot helps here because having worked with the photographer beforehand and seen the results you will feel more confident. There are so many things that couples can stress about on the day - number one often being the weather conditions here in the UK! I have worked in all sorts of conditions and some of my best wedding photographs have been taken in less than perfect weather.

• Plan any Formals Most couples still have formal photographs at their wedding unless they opt for purely reportage coverage. It really does pay to assign a friend or family member to help with the formal photos. While taking the formal posed portraits, it speeds the process along tremendously if you can allocate someone the job of rounding up the right people for the next photograph. I will always ask the couple to send a list of their required formal photographs to both this person and also to me. I can then liaise with them on the day ensuring that the whole process runs smoothly. They round them up and I then arrange the groups for each shot. It keeps things moving without guests having to hang around too long.

• Plan Time for Yourselves When planning your wedding day allow sufficient time for your wedding photographer to get some great shots of the two of you together. This is a great opportunity for you to spend some time together. The gardens at Knebworth are stunning and I always take the couple off around the grounds for some great photographs of just the two of them. For the whole of the day I will be taking many informal photographs that really capture the feel and atmosphere of your day, right from the early preparations through to the first dance. Of course you will both feature in these images, but it is also important to allow the two of you some time with together as well.

Finally, enjoy yourself! Many people feel like film stars by the end of their wedding. If you look happy then your wedding photographs will look great!

October Wedding at Knebworth House

Knebworth House is a terrific venue for weddings and provides the perfect setting for photography whether you intend to get married in the beautiful gardens, the house itself or the Manor Barn. The gardens are a perfect setting in the spring and summer but I have photographed couples in the gardens in mid-November at 4pm and the sun has still been shining!

Even in Winter we still try to get outside for a few photographs. It would be a terrible shame to get married here and not have any photographs of the wonderful exterior.

The house itself is magnificent for a small intimate wedding and the Manor Barn is great for larger ceremonies. Photographs are allowed in all settings and I always photograph discreetly during the service as these moments are an important part of the day.
